Weekly Reflection

6 July 2007

The final week has seen the updating of journals and the blog, its been interesting to see how the work has progressed during the year, with death being the first context it has moved around the area and investigated a variety of areas that are linked the questioning of the after life was researched and gave a deeper understanding into believing in an after life.

29 June 2007

The reassessing of the art work unknown as seen it progress through the work of Janine Antoni her simplistic approach speaks volumes and the avenue of her doing a performance of the work, this is an area i am highly interested in although the work is for after the ma i feel it necessary to start the project as soon as possible, the work has progressed from the situation of building a cocoon and being developed into a performative installation of textiles.

22 June 2007

The making of the final covers for the end of year expo, the work has seen the covers be filled with wadding then the maggots pocketed in the covers. reflection on the whole of the year has also been explored to refer to the aspects that have influenced and directed the project further, the artist agreement has been completed and just needs slight editing to adjust certain areas. this has really been interesting in undertaking as it is progressing the understanding of the professional practice within the work. updating the cv has made me realise that more exhibitions and proposals should be submitted to get the work into the public realm.

15 June 2007

Documenting the assessment outcome of film editing. A blog was created to document the work and the videos that have been produced. the maggots have finally turned to pulpit (caster) but have not turned there correct colours as they are black. so i am unsure of the flies fate but i feel that this adds a stronger element tot he work, yes i am killing these animals but i see there fate would be death on a fishers mans hook so i feel no remorse and think the work highlights the notion of life death, and the answer to the question is there an afterlife.

8 June 2007

The seat has been bought from ikea the frame is not ideal but through the lack of time and the aspect of testing out the piece it has been necessary to get it, remaking the cushions they have been filled with maggots, with the cushions be large and deep they require a large amount of maggots and once they are filled they seem to move a lot and all to the bottom of the cover resulting in an undesired effect. experiment into the manipulation of the cover has developed into pockets being added on the inside and the maggots being placed within to limit the movement and space they have to move within.

1 June 2007

The researching of artists working in a variety of per formative ways and who work with a connotation has been the focal point of the week. Annette messenger, Louise Bourgeois have branched work out to have universal significance from there own personal fear, their work give the audience there own recognition of memory, it is here that i feel that the work needs to reach into the hand embroidered handkerchief that makes you think of the person you would most like to revenge. the chair is taking on a more traditional appearance, the cushions are to be remade with organza which is a transparent fabric so as the maggots can be seen within.

25 May 2007

The notion of the work being art therapy has been directed towards the work and the context that i am presenting, i have no intention at all for this to be art therapy. yes i have always had a questioning mind when it comes to asking about the meaning of life and events in my life will clarify this further. but if i was to produce something that was therapy it would consist of the other happenings inn my life, that would probably have more clarity. but with the suggestion the thought of opening the context to a universal audience has caused a reassessing of the work and the suggestions of it. the maggots are still larvae.

18 May 2007

With the aspect of the presentation discussion the idea of presentation development has progressed to asking a set of questions and allowing the answers to be the articulation of the work. maggot experiments are seeing the progression of sitting waiting hoping, small fabric sachets trap the maggots and the life cycle is underway to see the life span, and what happens, as of yet they are still wriggling around. the appearance of the chair is being investigated to see what it should be and why, the initial chair has been disregarded for its aspect of being to modern.

Presentation Development

Open discussion with Sandrea Simons and Leif Gifford, talking openly about the diploma presentations made me realise that it is completely the nerves that took over and creates the weakness in my performance, as i prepare in advance for the presentation and create a PowerPoint that prompts my actions all the way through, but i seem to lose control on when it comes to the articulation of the project. it has been suggested that we present a 5 minute presentation on our present work next week, and critique each others performance. the idea of creating a dialogue about Broadways Friday live lecture has also been suggested to help in creating our own performance style.

area to think about when planning for presentation
What is the work about?
inclusion of headings and sub-headings, to prompt discussion.

Key areas of analyse next week

Articulation - clear and precise
Comparison of visuals
Being impersonal
Content.

11 May 2007

The tutorial with Alain gave suggestion of development of the blog and the present work and research, everything seems to be moving ok but really need to get started on the professional presentation development. group tutorials on the exposition gave an honest insight to peoples views on my work, suggesting that the animation is not entirely necessary and the art works without the documentation, but i think they failed to see the act of making, viewing instead the production of the work. can not the process have a spiritual presence is it not this from within me creating the work. although a discussion with Lucy on today made me assess the comments differently and think of other ways of creating the presence of myself within the work. unknown and awaiting transition is also being created at this present time, with enquiry into a range of different techniques and sampling of materials. Contact with the Hive business center were also achieved with an enquiry into the what happens and the intentions of the programme, giving an insight into the guidance of ones own business adventure. NCN have also been contacted to become a member of the network.

4 May 2007

The week has moved quite fast, with Monday being the day we set up transition, and what a performance with plenty of hard work. lesson learnt never assume the technician will have the equipment ready for setting up the show. Monday was spent painting one plinth and one wall, as well as putting up Joe's and my own work. I also realised that we should of incorporated more people in the set up of the work as doing absolutely everything was time consuming and a lot of things were missed out on the day, like setting the lighting in position, although i did go back and rearrange this to highlight the work more clearly. overall i feel positive about the preview and the show, but there are things that i would alter about it. the tutorial within the gallery space were also interesting in seeing how i talk about the work within a different space.

27 April 2007

so the week as gone ok work wise, read the book Eternal life which talks about man's creation of Utopia and the illusion of an existence within one's own mind. it highlighted the connection of the Utopian dream in relation to religion and the very first idea of utopia being the Garden of Eden, it also suggests that utopia will never exist but in mans mind because there is always a serpent to slivers into the the vision or reality. eternal life has given me a stronger indication into the visions and aspirations that humans try to create in this world of reality. decided that it would be good to narrow the search down slightly, with the advice from Alain as well i feel that as my work is related to my own obsessions and the search for a longing of belief, to read a few more texts on the subject of life after death, then to completely narrow it down into a process of art. the main focus of the week though was to complete the work for the exhibition Transition, this was succeeded today and i can finally start to think more widely about my own practice. also looking forward to the set up of the show on Monday. so all fun and games in making sure everything is sorted for the show and that it will all run smoothly. feed back from the presentation putting me in partnership with Leif to improve the professionalism to our presentations.

controlling mannerism
to perform a presentation on what and why we fuck up.
articulating of practice and context coherently.

24 April 2007

the feedback was nothing unsurprising really, but helpful in confirming my own self thoughts. the area of professionalism in my presentations is my key weakness, i know this strongly myself, but i find them so fucking hard to do, its easier to make fun of myself and distract from the situation that actually be to be serious about the situation. my main concern is that am afraid of the situation and feel as if what i have to say means nothing and that some people know so much more than myself, so what can i inform them off. Ideally i would love for my lack of confidence not to show, and know it is this that i need to focus on more strongly and hopefully with practice in this area i will gain confidence and blossom into a professional speaker.

20 April 2007

focus on creating the video documentation for transition, a new technique that i found was applied to the footage. to try something different and show how my skills are developing within video editing, still along to go with understanding the technology but so far its been alright. i have also really enjoyed learning something new and getting completely involved with my practice again. also found out about what Leif had been saying for so long, how frames suddenly disappear. my blog has also been updated and given a new face lift. it seems really weird on how the transition work is being created still when i feel like i should be producing work on, so take note when i get a practical idea make it then and there, otherwise i am not progressing the work as far as i should be.

13 April 2007

a holiday at last needed this break although still can't help but get involved in my work, updating the blog and reflecting on the work i have been doing. the work lacks a quality that there is about the belief in the afterlife and although i am trying to highlight situations in my work, there is a lack of articulation to it, i really don't know what it is i should be saying about it, if i should be saying anything at all. but i want to be able to relate to the art world and the practice of others so need to focus more and fellow artists that use a similar theme and how they approach it.

6 April 2007

Questioned by Innocent and Gioia about the presentation. sat comfortably in the pub we underwent the discussion and Innocent made the point about the presentation and the comment Alain had made earlier all my thoughts confirmed it was made about me. but i know and everyone saw, how shit i actually am. Gioia made comments on how she thinks i should research more philosophers, which seems a good idea, although i wish she could of informed me of a few she knows. the video quality of the wine glasses was brought up about the quality of the image and how the blood was to dark, this was a valued point as it shows on how i am still learning and developing within video editing.

30 March 2007

the postgraduate diploma presentation and i hated every 22 minute of the bulls up i performed to the group. i was so nervous it was probably easier or less humiliating to laugh than cry. but i did and although i know it wasn't the best i could do, i think it was quite informative about my practice and my learning agreement and the progression i have made through the hard times of the nervous breakdown i nearly undergo every time i stand up in front of an audience.

Postgraduate Diploma Presentation

23 March 2007

Brussels and what an adventure, but the confidence thing is probably the biggest weakness i have, i was fine until the cocktail party night when i had to stand in the room with my painting, and talk about it, i have this thing where you see the visual not me, i feel that it could off gone a lot better i could of thrilled the crowd like i would have a presence rather than shying away in the corner.

16 March 2007

The chance of going to Brussels is extreme and an important opportunity, the drawing up of designs have been the main focus, looking at various imagery and designs, with a following towards the aspect of process, the design is about the paint that is being used. With experimentation and investigation, the area of personal context is also having a direct influence upon the painting to be created.

9 March 2007

The development of audience interaction of the art piece consciousness continued has seen the development of the video documentation of the hand drawing the image, the work is to progress to being developed into a video installation that the audience take away as a gift, having access to the installation room has allowed the art piece to be tested the and see how the piece works, with the drawings being square the projection fell off the sides and become blurred when the blocks were moved away. this had led the thinking to producing a different video footage to accompany the drawings.

2 March 2007

The development of consciousness continued is seeing the drawings taking a form of small aspects of consciousness the aspect of the soul departing the body at death intrigues and fascinates me into thinking of how music can control and move the senses, although the drawings are becoming a little more detailed and controlled in there appearance. with the approach and research into near death experiences the work is focusing on the aspect of reincarnation which is directing the questioning of how we exist beyond our own world.

23 February 2007

Paris was an enjoyable opportunity to experience international art on a grand scale, the work in the gallery of modern art was off splendid visual investigations the time based element to the mold on the walls intrigued and gave an audience experience by the worst smell of rotting carrot puree, the small birds flying around the room, added a quality of questioning the reasoning and behavior of the birds.

16 February 2007

Artist research and searches into the void has heightened the research for nothingness which is a current photographic based project, thinking about the ways of burial and the aspect of cremation the work is focused on the two possibilities that exist after death, the notion of the image monotone in colour pale and withdrawn the body resides in the earth, the ash looking like a void a hole in the earth, similar to the hole left in the heart when somebody you know dies. the work was documented to accompany the photographic still, developing this practice of video has enabled to capture footage for the development of film editing.

9 February 2007

The second experiment of dripping of time has proven less successful than the first, the wine glasses covered in the cotton lace, was blend with the osmosis process, the work has also become very boring for myself, and i have lost all interest in the work, on reflection it has been decided that the work will be shown as a video documentation installation, with the projection showing the dye drip down but the glasses stay white, highlighting the notion that religion and the belief of an afterlife may well just be a man made fantasy.

2 February 2007

The art work dripping of time is being experimented to see how they work as an installation piece, using video documentation the work will be recorded to test the time scale of the bleeding of the wine glasses, after viewing the piece it has come to light how gruesome it may look and the significance of religious doctrines slightly puts me off the art work, the idea of osmosis is interesting in the process with the nylon lace, although the research has been religiously based it is off interest to separate the work from this area, although it is noted that belief in the after life normally consists of religious connotations.

26 January 2007

With the research being directed towards the aspect of parapsychology, the interest has led to the collaborating with a medium, who has offered to advice and help in the quest of proving there is life after death. a meeting has been arranged and a set of questions are being written up to send for him to answer.

19 January 2007

The case studies of Dr Raymond Moody has fascinated me into thinking about the proof that is out there about life existing after death, the process of evp's intrigue and have been researched in gaining an understanding on how this is possible, the aspect of ghosts and parapsychology inspires me in thinking about the connotation of the existence beyond this realm and although i want to belief theres still doubt about the true meaning.

12 January 2007

With reference to the reflection on the practice the chose to move into the avenue of the questioning of curiosity is intriguing and offering a stronger direction in the narrowing down of the research, with a possibility of trying to prove the afterlife, something in me knows that it can only be revealed the day we day, the idea of final letters is still being produced on a weekly basis and are resulting in becoming more and more difficult to write in the sense that i have only lived 25 years and there doesn't seem to be that much that has happened, the intensity of the memories coming back to me makes me question what the work is about, as i do not want to limit to my own experience.

1 December 2006

With the feedback from the certificate phase it has come to light how the project is focused around the situation of preparing for death, awaiting transition and final letters both project this image, but in a way it is about preparing to die, as only then will i receive the true knowledge. with this the context is shifting to the context of questioning the belief in life after death.

Post Graduate Certificate Presentation

17 November 2006

Preparation for the presentation, the practicing of the presentation really seemed to help in what the content should be. using the learning agreement as a pathway through the presentation it seems interesting to decided on the most relevant aspects of the work. a simple power point presentation has been drawn up to help as key points with the verbal explanations and discussion.

10 November 2006

The subversive stitch has been recommend and is proving to be vital in giving the research information regarding the history of textiles and the suggestions and implications it can suggest to the viewer, renowned through history as a feminine craft, a female skill that was used for a variety of reason. The class status divide is also relevant within the book, and although i have no plan to go down the path as femininity in art it is being beneficial in providing understanding the region of textiles.

3 November 2006

Several examples of the experiment dripping of time is being undertaken, the development of the process has been successful the process let aesthetically it is not as pleasing or attractive as first desired, the reflection of the work is showing the high connection to religious beliefs and the area of Christianity. The work is to be further developed within the idea of installation and the interaction of the audience, the idea of burial is intriguing and the biological death of the body, is showing interesting aspects. a new set up mind maps have been drawn up to help narrow down the area research to become slightly more focused in seeing how and what connections there is with political, social, culture and historical implications of death and the afterlife.

27 October 2006

Reading Damien Hirst's on the way to work has given insight in to how an artist approaches the context of death, immortality and love, the work has extreme visual qualities and questioning of the content the dead animals cut up and placed within tanks speaks about the fragility of life and how the body has less significance but can still be overpowering when seen. the aspect of fear is present in the work the fear of the shark alive as where in death it grabs humanistic curiosity.

20 October 2006

The idea of death and the bitter end is about a matter of process the body dose not instantly come to an end, the blood settling leaves a interest into the aspect of blood and the resurrection of Jesus Christ is connected with the body and soul, but through all this there seems to be an aspect of personal interest and memory associated implications that reminds me of my childhood upbringing and the attendance to church.

15 September 2006

Starting on the MA fine Art course has given a lot of inspiration, although i am not sure on how well i may adapt to the notion of idea as art.

Introduction Presentation

8 September 2006

Starting of the ma decorative arts course made me reassess my situation and interest within my own practice, and after 3 days on the programme i realised that Decorative Arts was no longer the interest i wanted to pursue. with discussion with lectures it was arranged for me to meet Alain Ayers for transferance on to the MA Visual Arts. it seems strange having studied a subject for three years and no longer feel inspired to create art, the aspect of design really does not entralle me to carry on the practice, but with a new adventure into fine art i hope that i retrieve this inspiration and carry on the passion i have for creating.
